The staircase has unequal steps, and the lighting changes at each one.

When cognitive capacity becomes purchasable, it immediately becomes the basis for social stratification more granular and more personally felt than any previous system. The Augmentation Hierarchy is not enforced by guards or paperwork — it is enforced by the body itself. Enhanced reflexes, processing speed, and conversational fluency are not claims of superiority. They are demonstrations of it, repeated in every interaction, every handshake, every thirty-second assessment.

Every person in the Sprawl occupies one of five positions, whether they acknowledge it or not. The hierarchy is readable in the body — augmentation level is written in how you move, speak, and think. Former Professional or Executive-Enhanced with reverted firmware. Augmentations removed, disabled, or allowed to fall past the Firmware Cliff. Their neural pathways still bear the shape of processing capacity that no longer exists — like a river bed after the water's been diverted. The cognitive phantom limb. Unaugmented person. Unaugmented labor. The word reduces a human being to their substrate — as if consciousness without chrome is just protein doing its best. Clinical. The kind of word that sounds descriptive and functions as dismissal.

A deprecated person. Someone who has fallen past the Firmware Cliff. Describes the visual quality of dead implant scars — and the social status that comes with them. Pitying, which is worse than hostile.

A visible augmentation malfunction. A twitch, a stutter, a moment where the hardware shows through the human. Social death in Nexus circles. Unremarkable in the Dregs. Sometimes affectionate, between people who share the malfunction.

Augmented obviously higher than the social context requires. An Executive-Enhanced walking through a Dregs market with response times that make the vendors flinch. The word carries the implication that the person's presence is a provocation — or a threat — or both.

The moment your true tier is detected through behavioral tells you didn't know you had. "She clocked me in thirty seconds." Happens constantly. Acknowledged rarely. The hierarchy is already established before introductions are over.

The inability to detect that someone at your same augmentation level thinks in a fundamentally incompatible shape. Two Executive-Enhanced individuals may share a tier and share nothing else if their cognitive optimization paths diverge. The hierarchy's invisible fault line — a sixth dimension emerging beyond level itself.

The hierarchy is already established before introductions are over. You cannot turn this off. Neither can they.

The current five tiers may look, in retrospect, like a period of unusual social legibility.

Every caste system generates its own language.
