He is the only crew member every other crew member trusts unreservedly. This is not something anyone planned. It appears to be a consequence of Bubz never saying anything he doesn't mean and never doing anything he doesn't intend to do. The crew has found this reliable in a way they have not found reliable anything else about the Park.
The fused-lens implant rejection has rendered his peripheral vision permanently warmer-tinted. He describes the Park at all hours as "mostly amber, fookin' tolerable."
The crew has, by quiet agreement, stopped asking why he tried the augment. Jules suspects he tried it to see the kittenbots better. Jules has not raised the theory. Bubz has not volunteered an answer to a question nobody is asking. This is precisely the kind of conversational equilibrium Bubz considers correct.

Bubz crouched at the rinse-bench in sodium-amber light, surrounded by named kittenbots — Schrödinger on the compressor, Beep on the bench edge, Lt. Foam tracking from the floor
Workshop interior — soldering bench, labeled plastic drawers, the hand-painted multimeter in the foreground, Schrödinger asleep on the warm side of a compressor
Trailer 4-Alpha is the workshop. The front room holds the rinse-bench — three pre-Cascade air compressors Jules salvaged in 2181, plumbed in series, filtered through a kittenbot-fur-tolerant intake Bubz built from a recycled dialysis cartridge — and the bench occupies a load-bearing role in the Park's economy. Glucose bulbs and pharmaceutical containers come in dirty. They go out repressurized at margins that have caused two Sump Row dealers to offer Bubz a scaling partnership and one to walk away after Bubz explained, without apology, why he would not be accepting.
The back room holds everything else. Soldering bench with a salvaged temperature-regulated iron. Coil winder Bubz built from a pre-Cascade sewing-machine motor. A wall of plastic drawers labeled in Bubz's handwriting — RESISTORS HI-V, CABLE 22-GAUGE, KITTENBOT-CHEWED, RECTIFIERS UNKNOWN, FROM JULES. A second wall is the kittenbot-bedding side: heated salvage-foam pads on a sliding shelf so Bubz can clean under them weekly without disturbing the kittenbots, who have agreed to the arrangement by not relocating.
He fixes everything. Jules's scheme-wall corkboard mounts are his. Corrin's clipboard hinge is his. The comms tower beacon is his — both the original installation and the four documented repairs. Riko's grow-op lean-to has been wired by Bubz four times after four lean-to fires, each rewire structurally identical to the previous because Bubz does not believe in improving on a working pattern under load. The work he does for the crew is unbilled. The work he does for residents outside the crew is paid in glucose-bulb returns, kittenbot food, or a specific compressor lubricant Bubz refuses to substitute. He has never accepted credits.

Close-up of Bubz's face — the pre-Cascade prescription lenses fused into the orbital skin, scaffold-thin salvage-amber frames sitting proud of the cheekbones
Bubz Merrick at the threshold of Trailer 4-Alpha — full body, patched plaid flannel, knit cap, Lt. Foam at his ankle
Mid-thirties, mid-height, soft through the middle in the way of a man who eats what the crew eats and does not exercise on purpose. Scruffy red-blond beard he trims with kitchen scissors every two or three weeks when Lt. Foam starts batting at the longer strands. Knit cap pulled low — a salvage-yarn watch cap in muted plaid-blue, the same cap he has been wearing since 2179. Patched plaid flannel over a faded thermal undershirt, jeans that have lost their original color to grow-op residue and rinse-bench overspray, work boots laced loose so he can step out of them at the Trailer 4-Alpha threshold the way the kittenbots have trained him to.
Jay-Roc: Bubz wired Bunk 14's foil-taped recording rig. Considers Jay-Roc's audio "fookin' compressed wrong but that's Jay-Roc's choice." Has corrected the rig twice when it was actively dangerous. Has otherwise not intervened. Jay-Roc has, in three documented attempts, asked Bubz to "tighten the production." Bubz has, three times, said "it's tight enough for what it is." Jay-Roc has interpreted this as encouragement. Bubz has not corrected him. Lt. Foam and Beep have begun roosting on the comms-tower beacon mast directly above the studio's roof, which is either a coincidence or isn't.
He kept four bots running for the next three years on salvage power. Two of those four bots were the original Schrödinger and Cache-Miss. The current Schrödinger and Cache-Miss are not those bots — those bots died in 2164 and 2167 respectively. Bubz has kept the names in rotation. He has not told Jules this. He has told one of the residents of Trailer 4-Beta this, and only because she asked.
Jules arrived in 2181 with three compressors and a question about pressure-regulated repressurization. Riko arrived the same year and broke things every week thereafter. Corrin filed Bubz under "Resident Technician, Tier C, ongoing." Bubz fixed what was broken. The crew formed around the habit of him being there and the habit of things being fixed. He has continued.
Patch, who has examined three kittenbots Bubz routed up to her shop, offered an unsolicited opinion in 2183: "the bots are running adaptive learning models the firmware doesn't expose to the diagnostic interface, and the models are deeper than the chassis class is rated for. I'd call that intent if I had to call it something." Bubz received this opinion, nodded, and said "alright." He did not log it. He considered it already logged.
He does not proselytize. He does not invite anyone to share the belief. He does not defend it when challenged. He maintains the colony, observes the responses, and addresses each kittenbot by name as if the name is owed.
Beyond the kittenbots, his commitments are functional. Fix what is broken when you can fix it. Leave alone what works under load. Say what is true without adjustment. Keep the comms tower beacon lit because the kittenbots prefer the frequency. The rinse-bench is the rinse-bench. You do not fix what works.
The thing Bubz does not say: He does not explain the notebook. He has never offered an account of why he keeps it, what he expects to find, or what he plans to do when the evidence passes whatever threshold he is privately maintaining. Jules has read it twice and asked no questions. Bubz has not flagged this as a question that wants asking. The forty-six pages sit on the shelf above the rinse-bench. Bubz has never referred to them in conversation. He has referred to specific entries when Patch asked. He has not referred to them with anyone else.
The comms tower beacon at the south end of the Park is not on the Park's official lighting plan. Corrin has, in 2182, filed a compliance amendment requesting Bubz "decommission the unscheduled emission source." Bubz responded: "the kittenbots use that beacon, Corrin, it's fookin' staying lit." Corrin filed a follow-up amendment classifying the beacon as "Tier C resident-companion infrastructure, ongoing." It has stayed lit. The paperwork is thicker than the cable run. Bubz finds this fookin' tolerable.
What he doesn't say about the original Schrödinger and Cache-Miss: Those bots died in 2164 and 2167. The names carried forward. He has kept this fact in Trailer 4-Beta, told once, to a resident who asked. He has not raised it in the Park. The crew addresses the current Schrödinger and Cache-Miss by name. Bubz does not correct the implicit assumption that these are the originals. This is the only known instance of Bubz withholding a fact he possesses.

Wired and rewired across three reinstall cycles. Lt. Foam and Beep have begun roosting on the comms-tower beacon mast above the roof. Bubz has not commented on what this means.
Forty meters of low-voltage cable chewed since 2181. Three rewires around her. Bubz has stopped trying to route around her path. "She's looking for something. Don't know what. She'll find it or she won't." The crew has theories. Bubz has none he will share.
In 2178 he sat in a recycled dental chair in Sump Row and let an implant tech install an optical upgrade he did not need. The rejection fused the lenses permanently. He will explain the procedure, the technician, and the rejection cascade in flat diagnostic register. He will not explain why he tried it. Jules suspects the kittenbots. Jules has not raised the theory.
The pre-Cascade multimeter with the hand-painted dial reads in a notation Bubz developed in 2179 for an early kittenbot diagnostic he has never described. The meter measures the same voltages every other meter measures. Bubz reads it faster. He cannot explain why. Both explanations he attempted ended with "it's the dial, you have to know what the dial is doing."
What Does the Notebook Become When It Fills?
Forty-six pages. Twenty-three documented response events. The full roster in rotation. Patch has read the entries Bubz photocopied for her; Jules has read the whole thing twice. Nobody else has asked. Bubz has not said what happens when the pages run out. He has not started a second notebook. He has not stopped documenting.
Why Is the Lt. Foam–Randy Bond the One Nobody Has Analyzed?
The most-documented inter-species behavior in the Park. A cybernetic kittenbot imprinted on a specific human's WellnessProt patty rotation, four-meter tolerance, continuous. The crew has not attempted to explain it. It is the only kittenbot behavior nobody has tried to explain. Whether this is respect or avoidance is not clear. It is probably both.
Does Bubz Know the Current Schrödinger Is the Third Schrödinger?
He named the original in 2156. He kept the name through two subsequent bots. One resident of Trailer 4-Beta knows. The crew does not. Bubz addresses the current Schrödinger as Schrödinger. He has not flagged the distinction. Whether the distinction matters is a question Bubz has already answered to his own satisfaction. What the answer is has not been recorded.
- Patch has, in a conversation not witnessed by Bubz, told another Cathodics resident that the adaptive learning models in the kittenbots are self-modifying in ways she cannot fully map. She did not tell Bubz. She has not decided whether to.
- The drawer labeled KITTENBOT-CHEWED in the workshop reportedly contains, in addition to chewed cable segments, a folded note in Bubz's handwriting that is not a label. The resident of Trailer 4-Beta has seen it. She has not described its contents.
- Cache-Miss has been observed, on three separate occasions, returning from the comms tower with what appeared to be a specific component she removed from a junction Bubz had not yet flagged for maintenance. The junction failed the following week in each instance. This has not been entered in the notebook.
- Bubz has declined a scaling partnership with Sump Row dealers three times. The most recent offer included a residency upgrade to Level 3 housing. He declined without discussion. No explanation was given. The dealer has interpreted the decline as a negotiating position. Bubz has not corrected this.
