Overview
Heat is the Sprawl's most honest data stream. Corporate PR can be massaged. Air quality readings can be recalibrated. Triumph Scores can be optimized. But the temperature of a wall in a sub-level corridor at 3 AM tells you exactly one thing: what the system on the other side of that wall is doing to the air you breathe. It does not negotiate. It does not spin.
Thermal cartography is Mika Vasquez-Osei's practice of mapping this honesty โ producing three-dimensional heat models of interstitial zones that document temperature, electromagnetic density, air quality, and the precise boundaries where corporate infrastructure ends and human habitation begins. The maps use a five-color system inherited from Mika's mother, a pre-Cascade HVAC engineer who spent thirty years reading buildings the way cardiologists read EKGs: blue for corporate-conditioned zones (below 24ยฐC), green for tolerable ambient (24-28ยฐC), yellow for sustained exposure risk (28-32ยฐC), orange for dangerous (32-36ยฐC), red for lethal (36ยฐC and above).
The color distribution is not random. Blue appears exclusively in zones where Nexus runs processing infrastructure or Ironclad maintains structural systems. Red appears exclusively in zones where Dregs residents sleep. The gradient between them โ the yellow-to-orange transition where tolerable becomes dangerous โ tracks, within a margin of approximately 1.7ยฐC, the boundary where corporate maintenance contracts expire and nobody's budget picks up the difference.
When the maps are overlaid with mortality data from the Counted boards, they draw a line so direct it could be entered as evidence in any court in the Sprawl. This is why Mika has never published them.
"Heat is information," her mother told her. "It tells you everything about the system that produces it, if you know how to read it." Her mother was talking about HVAC units. The principle scaled.
Methodology
Mika presses a surface-temperature probe against walls, floors, and exposed infrastructure, recording each reading on a hand-drawn map. She supplements probe data with palm-contact assessment โ a skill her mother taught โ pressing her bare hand against surfaces to read thermal stability and gradient direction. The palm catches things the probe misses: the faint pulse of a cycling vent behind a sealed wall, the dead stillness of infrastructure that stopped working months ago and nobody reported because nobody with reporting authority lives down here.
The maps are hand-drawn on paper. Each covers a specific interstitial zone at a specific time. Multiple maps overlaid reveal temporal patterns โ how the thermal geography shifts with the Processing Season, with compute droughts, with whatever Nexus's load-balancing algorithms decided to route through Sector 9 this week. A zone that maps green in March maps orange by July. The residents didn't move. The infrastructure didn't change. The corporate processing schedule did.
During the 2182 drought, Mika's thermal readings in the sub-levels of Sector 9 hit orange six days before Ironclad's own environmental monitors registered any anomaly. Her early warning reached the Lamplighter network, which activated the Dropout Protocol ahead of schedule. Eighty-nine people were relocated before temperatures crossed the red threshold.
Ironclad's monitors eventually confirmed the readings. The six-day gap between a woman with a probe and a corporation with a sensor grid has not been explained in any public filing.
Distribution
The maps move through the Lamplighter network โ hand to hand, copy to copy, each reproduction introducing small variations that Mika considers acceptable losses. During extreme weather events, versions appear on Counted boards across the Dregs, where they serve as de facto evacuation guides for zones the official emergency system doesn't acknowledge as occupied.
The Counted don't cite their source. The Lamplighters don't keep records. Mika doesn't ask who has her maps. The chain of custody is deliberately illegible. This is what operational security looks like when your evidence could get you killed and your evidence is also keeping people alive.
The Analog Problem
Every thermal map is hand-drawn on paper, stored in physical locations known only to Lamplighter contacts, and destroyed once the conditions it documents have shifted enough to make it obsolete.
Paper does not self-index. Paper cannot be remotely queried. Paper does not append metadata. Each map exists as a physical object in a specific place, readable only by someone who understands Mika's mother's notation system โ a private language of gradient arrows and temperature shorthand that functions, accidentally, as its own encryption.
The permanent record demands that all information be digital, searchable, and eternal. Mika's maps are analog, local, and deliberately temporary. They document corporate negligence with hand-drawn precision and then they disappear. The Sprawl has built surveillance systems that remember everything. Mika has built a counter-practice that remembers nothing โ except the 89 people who are alive because the maps existed at the right time, in the right hands, before the paper was burned.
Digitization would make the maps court-admissible evidence. Digitization would also make Mika findable. She has done the math on which outcome arrives first.
Sensory Details
A thermal map pinned to a safe-house wall: dense with color, beautiful the way data visualizations are beautiful when the data is killing people. Blue corporate zones at the margins, clean and cold. Green corridors where the air is merely uncomfortable. The yellow-to-orange gradient of the Thermal Shadow spreading across the center like a bruise developing in real time. Red pockets at exhaust-adjacent sub-levels where the temperature readings are annotated in Mika's handwriting with small, precise numbers and her mother's gradient arrows โ a notation system nobody else can fully read, pointing in directions that mean something only to the two people who ever spoke this language, one of whom is dead.
The hand-drawn quality makes each map singular. No two look the same. The paper smells faintly of the zones it was drawn in โ machine oil, recycled air, the particular staleness of corridors where ventilation is a rumor.
